Coloring in the Negative Space

So at my classes at the AC, we had to make a character in a way that had never been done before (aka setting us up for failure, yay!)

But it was still a cool challenge, so I made a Sand Man out of Sand and sugar

An incredibly slow progression as to where I’d like to be with my ability to draw people, but a progression has at least been made :)

Some of my better work from my Clothed Figure 2 class, if I get enough courage then maybe I’ll post my final :P

Done in charcoal with live models

Aha, part two of my Illustration 1 final - to do a concept piece of an environment from The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey.

This was definitely a struggle for me, but one that I needed to have :P It was a great experience to actually research 1920’s kitchens and log cabins, so that I could get a proper setting laid out.

Done with paper cut outs again, and put together and edited in Photoshop CS5

Part one of my Illustration 1 final, based on The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey (which I haven’t read yet, but I really look forward to!)

An assignment for my Illustration 1 class - take a part of a story and make something out of it C:

And because I’m incredibly lazy, I went with the story of Dangerous Dan McGrew, because I’d already designed the characters from my AC class. It was convenient, and incredibly lucky that my Illustration teacher decided to be nice to me, and let me make this one with paper cut outs instead of gouache, or as a digital illustration :D

So anyway, heres Dangerous Dan McGrew, cut out from pieces of paper, and finished off in Photoshop CS5

Otter family bedtime story

Done with pencil in about four hours

Yay for more characters and the end of good sleeping habits!

It actually wasn’t so bad.. for this one we had to pick a theme ( I was going for the whole wolf chasing after farm animals thing) and make characters based off of these three basic shapes.

I’ve really noticed that my instructors favor the kids book style… so I’m working on emphasizing that :P Last time it was done with paper cut outs, but I figured I may as well cheat and see if I could recreate the style digitally.

So here you go! A wolf/ fox, chick, and a cow. Drawn with pencil and edited in Photoshop CS5

Here’s a series of characters that I made based off of the story of “Dangerous Dan McGrew” :) We had to design them based off of a particular style that my teacher had in mind, and finally I was able to come up with something that he really liked :D So I’m happy with this one ^^

These were done with colored pencil, marker, and various scraps of paper

I present to thee, oh great people of Tumblr, the result of much luck and persistence; ten character studies, cut up and glued together from little scraps of paper, and drawn on with pen and pencil.

Long story short.. through a series of incredible events, spanning out over the course of about a year or so, I’ve been granted an incredible chance to study character design under the artists Matt Nolte and Daniel Holland. So far 2012 has been very kind to me, and even though I’m still under the influence of beginners luck excitement, I’m really stoked to be able to learn from them, to keep growing, and finally to start having fun again :’D

This is just our first assignment, so it still looks a bit rough in the beginning as I’m figuring it all out.. I’m definitely a shrimp amongst sharks in this class (most people have already gotten jobs in the animation and gaming industry)(slash starting out in my own new apartment on my own with a cat AND IT’S TERRIFYING BUT IT’S OKAY) But it is definitely nice to have the chance to get my feet wet, and to be able to start proving myself/ seeing if I’ll survive and not die or anything C:

Soooooo here’s my first shot, critique and whatnot is definitely encouraged, and wish me luck for the upcoming semester C:

A friend of mine said that picking myself back up and drawing again might make me feel better, or at least take my mind off of things. Here’s the result ^^

Sketches done in about 10-15 minutes, in pen

Also, sorry If I’m not responding to messages very quickly… I’m working on getting better at it and being social again :P

More concept work yay!

Done for a short film that I’m working on ^^

This one took about seven hours, and was done in Corel Painter 11, and Adobe Photoshop CS5

Today was just one of those days… so I made this to try and cheer myself up

….as it turns out, sad puppies in the rain don’t really make things better… oh well

Done in Corel Painter 11, in about 3-4 hours

A compilation of random pen and charcoal sketches
